  • 5 Things We Love About the Panasonic Lumix GH5!

This week, Panasonic tech rep Jack Salamanchuk visited our Cleveland and Cincinnati stores for in store training and a Panasonic Lumix GH5 Launch Event! Our store staff had the opportunity to get their hands on the GH5 and learn about some of the exciting new features that this camera offers. We put together a list of 5 things that we love about Panasonic's Lumix GH5 for anyone that wasn't able to make it to the event!

5 Things We Love About the Panasonic Lumix GH5

    10 Bit Color:

The Panasonic Lumix GH5 offers 10-Bit color in video recording mode. This is huge because most cameras today only offer 8-Bit color video recording. The addition of 10-Bit color means that you can capture many more shades of color in your video compared to what 8-Bit recording can offer. To put it simply, 8-Bit recording captures 16,777,216 different colors. 10-Bit color offers you the ability to capture over a billion different colors, or 64 times the number that 8-Bit allows.

    Dual I.S. Image Stabilization:

We did a live comparison between the GH4's image stabilization and the Panasonic GH5's Dual I.S. Image Stabilization and were blown away! There is a night and day difference between the two, and the Dual I.S. system allows you to create ultra smooth handheld video without the use of gimbals or any other stabilizer. Panasonic's Dual I.S. image stabilization is incredible.

Panasonic has created several accessories to expand the capabilities of the GH5. The two must have accessories are the XLR  Audio Adaptor and the V-Log L Firmware Upgrade Kit.

The XLR Audio Adapter is a must have for anyone looking to produce professional level video with their GH5. It offers two XLR audio inputs with an output of up to 96 kHz at 24 bits. The adapter is powered by the camera through the hot shoe, and has a built in pre-amp.

The V-Log L Firmware Upgrade Kit is another must have for anyone looking to produce professional level video with the GH5. This expansion provides the ability to capture 12 stops of dynamic range for better highlight and shadow details in your video. Please note: utilizing this accessory will provide video that requires color grading and other professional level file handling.

    2 Card Slots

A first for the Lumix G Series cameras, Panasonic has added a second card slot to the GH5. You can utilize the second card slot in multiple ways including; backup, overflow, and RAW + JPeg.

    Unlimited Record Time

Gone are the days where you have to re-start recording every 15-30 minutes! The Panasonic GH5 allows you to record until your card is full or the camera battery dies. This means that you can record a full wedding ceremony or event from beginning to end without missing any moments!

  • Hands-On With the Panasonic Lumix GX-85

    Panasonic GX-85

Panasonic is pushing the limits of what is considered standard for DSLR/Mirrorless cameras. With the Panasonic Lumix GX-85, Panasonic has added more innovative features such as Post Focus, 4K Photo Burst, 5-axis dual image stabilization (both in lens and in body stabilization), as well as many other features that help push Panasonic Lumix cameras to the forefront in terms of innovation.

Panasonic gave us the opportunity to test out the GX-85. After several weeks with the camera, we thought it was time to share our top three favorite features!

    Image Quality:

First, and most important, the Panasonic Lumix GX-85 impressed us with the image quality that it was providing straight out of camera. The JPEG files that it produced were extremely sharp and provided pleasing color reproduction. This made it extremely easy to quickly share the photos that we took and reduced editing time. In fact, we very rarely found it necessary to work with Panasonic's RAW files.

    Physical Size:

---(Photo of size comparison between traditional DSLR and GX-85)---

Hands down, our favorite thing about the camera is it's physical size. We took it with us to lunch during the RNC in Cleveland and found it extremely easy to carry while walking the 30 blocks downtown. That walk would have been a different experience with a larger DSLR.

Not only is the Panasonic Lumix GX-85 smaller in size, it is also significantly lighter. Even with a long zoom lens, the camera remains compact and lightweight due to Panasonic's compact Micro 4/3 lens lineup.

    4K Photo Burst:

During a short day trip to Louisville, we had the opportunity to shoot on the floor of a working glass blowing studio (A huge thank you and shoutout to Flame Run in Louisville). Panasonic's 4K Photo Burst helped us capture the action and movement in the workshop by taking short 4K videos instead of photos. Pulling a still image from that short video is as easy as a few taps on the screen when reviewing your shots on the built in touchscreen LCD.

  • Introducing the Profoto D2

Profoto_D2-480x275With the ability to freeze action at up to 1/63,000 of a second, to shoot bursts of 20 images per second and sync with camera shutter speeds as fast as 1/8,000 of a second, the D2 is redefining the definition of speed in monolights

“For a photographer, every new day is a new challenge. So for them, speed isn’t one thing – it’s many. That’s why we created the D2 to be remarkably fast in every way” says Johan Wiberg, Product Manager at Profoto.

A photographer might need to freeze action with absolute sharpness. The D2 brings pin sharp clarity with a flash duration of 1/63,000 of a second, which makes it faster than most high end studio packs on the market. Better still, it maintains a super short flash duration across the full energy range.

With the D2 you can shoot up to 20 flashes per second . That allows you to catch 20 versions of the same moment, and quite often that’s the difference between capturing a good image and a great image.

profoto_d2_backBringing yet another dimension to speed is Profoto’s High Speed Sync technology (HSS). This allows the D2 to sync with the fastest shutter speeds available. An advantage when you need to catch a deep blue sky or take full control of ambient light.

The D2 can also help to speed up workflow because it’s equipped with patented TTL technology. You can point-and-shoot and the D2 will automatically adjust its output for perfect exposure. But manual mode is available at click of a button, so switching between both modes with settings intact just makes everything move faster.

In terms of output, the D2 is available in 500Ws and 1000Ws versions. At full power you’ll easily overpower the sun, or fully illuminate a larger Light Shaping Tool. Both versions come with a super wide 10 f-stop energy range and superior color consistency over the entire range. So leave the ND filters at home and add just a hint of light if needed.

What can the Profoto D2 do for you?

    Freeze the moment

The D2 can provide super quick flash durations up to 1/63,000 of a second. Shoot a splash of water and it will be frozen in mid-air – a photographic work of art.

    Catch the moment

The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That’s fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump and you’ll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.

    Control your surroundings

Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) enables you
to shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8,000 of a second. Use HSS to shoot with large aperture in bright conditions or to freeze action with absolute sharpness.

    Shoot with ease using TTL

Point-and-shoot in TTL Mode. Switch to Manual Mode and control the light with intuitive buttons and menus. Forget about the flash and focus on the light.

    Overpower any light

The D2 packs enough of punch to overpower the available light in almost any situation. Its power is also a blessing when shooting at larger distances or when using larger Light Shaping Tools.

    Grow with speed

It has the speed to set you free, and the power for you to be at your best. It’s an integrated part of the extensive Profoto system. Go full speed ahead with the D2.
